about me

Jordan was born and raised in Edinburgh. Even as a child he always had an artistic side but his love for design grew during his time at high school. 'Still residing in Edinburgh, he has just finished his final year at Edinburghs Napier University, studying Product Design. Whilst on this course he also discovered a great interest in graphic design, packaging design and branding, developing experience in both in order to expand his skills and portfolio.

During the spring and summer months of 2010 Jordan attended Zhengzhou University of Light Industry in Zhengzhou, China, as part of an International Students. The experience has made Jordan an even more focused and determined designer. Jordan is very heavily influenced by Japanese design and visited Japan after his 5 month experience in China.

His work is all about fusing simplicity with beauty and functionality into one well balanced design.

Major Project

makesenses

The autistic spectrum affects around 1 in 100 people, there are no known 'cures' but there are methods of promoting learning and development. Each toy is personal and hand made from old clothes and fabrics which children with developmental conditions are familiar with, whether it be by touch, smell or sight.

Simply customise the toy using the makesenses website, place your order, then send in your materials and have your toys made!

Major Project

makesenses

propriopception development

The hidden proprioceptive sense is the sense of body awareness. providing a weighted stimulant can help children develop their propcrioceptive sense. sensack works like a satchel bag, wrapping around the child. There is a large pocket on the back to carry things in, for example, juice or a book which increases the weight and therefore provides the proprioceptive input.

Major Project

makesenses

vestibular development

The vestibular system contributes to our sense of balance. Senseat helps to develop the child's sense of balance by acting as a rocking chair. The chair can be sat in lengthways or breadthways and has fabric handles on either side to help the child balance further while seated.

Major Project

makesenses

social development

Children with autism often find it difficult to socialise and interact with other people. To try and improve their social development, both the sensack and senseat can be combined. This allows the child to carry both toys at the same time very comfortably and take them both to places where they can socialise more such as after school clubs or play parks.

The result is to hopefully create better social integration with other children.

Lúnkuò

Colours and numbers have great importance in Chinese culture; red symbolises 'luck' and white symbolises 'pure'. The number 5 is also considered a good number. Bringing together these cultural values and the traditional forms of Chinese wine vessels into a modern design births the Lúnkuò water jug.

Using the purity of white and the luckiness of red this 5 piece drinking set creates a harmony between Chinese and Western style into its design.

REVO Lamp

During our time in China the tutors were very enthusiastic about working with us and being able to learn from each other. This project began as a group and together with an illustrator (who designed a cartoon character), we developed a product based on that character.

The shape of the character in our group developed into a elegant lamp, the brightness is controlled by the degree of rotation.

Vespa Offspring

The first brief given in China was to design a non-electrical scooter. Inspiration came from the iconic Vespa, the idea being that everyone can afford to buy it

The new Vespa Offspring is a compact and lightweight push version of the more popular petrol models. Designed for everyone, the Offspring offers a more healthy and efficient way of getting around. The adjustable handlebars and compact design allow for it to be carried over the shoulder or by hand. It is a modern twist on the famous Italian design icon allowing anyone to glide around in style.

Fossil Fuel

In the aim of developing skills in other areas of design we were asked to brand and package a chocolate bar. It is inspired by the process of fossilisation and the different layers of rock.

The design brings a more fun and interactive approach to eating a bar of chocolate as you are encouraged to excavate the white chocolate bones by 'digging'through the flakey chocolate on top.

Systematically Transmitted Diseases (STD)

Antivirus Packaging is based on novelty, deriving from existing condom packets by using the same type of packaging and style. The novelty being that even computers get infections and it is recommended to protect them by using an Antivirus program. These are examples of the most well known Antivirus software companies.

The packaging reduces the size of typical boxed software into one simple packet containing the CD - all that you need - manuals and information are all found on the disc.

Super Noodles

The iconic moment in Superman of Clark Kent opening his shirt to reveal the 'S' emblem inspired the rebrand. Every flavour was turned into a superhero, each with it's own unique emblem.

This also made the rebrand quite literal as the old packaging looks as if it is being opened to reveal the new identity; the new batch of Supernoodles.

Tshirt Design

People often cut up old tops to in order to re-use them which is where the inspiration for this functional graphic comes from.

Custrimize allows the user the freedom to customise the tshirt in anyway they like by cutting along the guidelines. If they do not want to it provides a simple, stylish graphic.

Interactions

As part of my major project I developed a poster of 100 ways in which a child can interact with a toy. The children were represented by big circles and the toys by other smaller geometric shapes.

This inspired ideas for designing toys for children with developmental disorders such as autism and asperger's syndrome; the foundation of my major project.

Water Fountain

One of the first university briefs given was to design a water fountain for a public space.

Inspired by architect Tadao Ando's use of cross's and strong structures the fountain pumps water up through the centre of the concrete stand and flows out through the bamboo shoots, the water is then filtered from the pool below and re-used.

The water is also safe to drink.

Airport Seating

Airports and airplanes are public places yet we all desire some form of privacy while we wait. The seating is inspired by nests made by insects, the cocoons they create offer a protection, shelter and privacy.

The seating allows for people, couples and families to retreat into their own personal solitude and engulf themselves in a nest.

CAD

Developing Solidworks CAD skills using an Audi R8 tutorial purchased online.

The car was created entirely on Solidworks in different parts then assembles together ready to be rendered in V-Ray.

Sketching

Series of sketching using various materials; pencils, biros, marker pens.

Digital sketching done using Bamboo Wacom graphics tablet and Alias Sketchbook Pro.
